Working with the autism spectrum: theory into practice

About the course

This is an evidence-based course which explores ways of supporting autistic people in a range of settings. The assessment (a case study essay) will allow you to reflect upon your own practice, and use the knowledge you gain to further improve the support you offer to autistic people.  

A blended learning approach is utilised for this module, which includes 6 mornings of live online teaching with National Autistic Society Lecturers and further learning online. The course will run over 3 weeks, with live online teaching each Monday and Tuesday morning (9.00 to 12.30). 

Course dates are 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 & 21 June 2022.

Course content

The content for the course includes an overview of the key areas of difference in autism and an introduction to theories and autistic perspectives to underpin this understanding. A variety of topics are then looked at within the context of the SPELL framework. SPELL is the National Autistic Society’s framework for understanding and responding to autistic people’s needs.

 

Credits awarded

Twenty credits at the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) level 8 (equivalent Scottish Higher Education (SHE) level 2 or Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQ) level 4) awarded by Edinburgh Napier University following the submission of a successful case study. 

The course can be completed on an attendance basis only (without the submission of the case study), however, this would not lead to any credits being awarded.
